Herbal and Natural Remedies for Migraine

Whether it is a sensitivity to foods that contain nitrates, a change in the weather, or simply not enough sleep, there is usually a trigger associated with developing the intense, throbbing pain of a migraine headache. The trigger however, isn't really the cause of the migraine, but rather a factor that aggravates an inborn tendency for this kind of headache pain. When triggered, a series of chemical and electrical events in the brain inflame the blood vessels and increase sensitivity to pain.
Unlike a run of the mill tension headache, migraine headaches stop you in your tracks, interrupting normal activity and often require you to completely shut off all stimuli from the outside world, by shutting yourself in a dark, quiet room.
While you can't get rid of your predisposition to getting migraines, it can help to learn about and recognize the triggers that cause them. In addition to trying to avoid the triggers that cause migraines, herbal remedies may help to prevent migraines in some people, or at least reduce the number of attacks.
For the type of migraine that is relieved by applying heat to your head, consider the use of feverfew. Feverfew may actually prevent migraines from happening in the first place. To prevent migraines, take 125 mgs. in capsule form every day. Feverfew works as an anti-inflammatory, similar to aspirin, and also as a vasodilator. It may also help to reduce nausea, vomiting and the sensitivity to light that often is part of migraines. You will need to take feverfew every day to get the most benefit.
Take a daily dose of Flaxseed oil. One to two tablespoons of fresh, cold-pressed oil daily may help you get fewer migraines and less intense ones when you do. Flaxseed oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids, which help to change your body chemistry so that you produce fewer harmful prostaglandins. These are hormone-like chemicals in the blood that may increase your sensitivity to pain and cause constriction of the blood vessels.Look for good quality flaxseed oil in the refrigerated section of your health food store, it should be packaged in a dark, opaque glass bottle. Flaxseed oil is safe to take indefinitely.
Wood betony is an herb that helps to ease nervous tension. If you develop migraines from a buildup of nervous tension, this herb will help to relax you and strengthen your nervous system. Wood betony is a traditional herbal remedy for migraines, and is widely available in tincture form in health food stores. Take wood betony for 3 to 4 weeks, 2 to 6 milliliters of tincture three times a day to ease tension. If you find you aren't getting results, consult your physician.
For migraines that aren't helped with herbal or natural remedies, consult your physician for more conventional treatment options.

I have had migraines my entire life, just had one that knocked me to my knees and it hurt so bad I puked like 16 times. I will try some of these and hopefully i am lucky and they work. Informative and voted up.
I get them every once in a while. I hate taking pills! I found out by accident that aromotherapy helps tremendously. I hosted a spa party at my house and we put lavendar, patchouli, and bergamont essential oils in a cool mist diffuser. My headache that I had for two days straight (even with taking 1000 mg of ibuprofin), mysteriously disappeared. My boyfriend would never admit it, but I also watched his mood go from bad to good in about 1/2 hour. Essential oils are great. If anyone else has experience using them with success get in touch with me at Livinity/sandsangel on google+ or facebook
